Successful Intellectual Property Rights Training Held from March 13th to 17th, 2023

Successful Weeklong IPR Certification Course for Scholars and Students

A successful weeklong certification course on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) was recently held from March 13th to March 17th, 2023. The program was orchestrated by the IPR Cell, Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of Sikkim (GOS) and was supported by the North East Centre for Training Application and Reach (NECTAR).

The opening ceremony took place at the Sidkeong Tulku Conference Hall, Forest Environment and Wildlife Management Department, and was inaugurated by Dr. Arun Kumar Sarma, Director General of NECTAR, in the presence of Shri Bhuwan P. Pradhan, Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of Sikkim, and Dr. B.C. Basistha, Principal Director of the Biotechnology Division, (DST, GOS). Participants in the program included research scholars from a variety of state and central government research institutes, including the Institute of Bioresources and Sustainable Development (IBSD) and the Indian Cardamom Research Institute (ICRI), as well as universities such as Sri Ramaswami Memorial University (SRM), Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences (SMIMS), and Sikkim University (SU).

Furthermore, students from several schools in Sikkim, including Enchey Senior Secondary School, Deorali Girls Senior Secondary School, Tadong Senior Secondary School, and West Point Senior Secondary School, attended the weeklong training program. The main objective of the course was to provide training on various IPR acts, such as copyrights, trademarks, patents, geographical indications, protection of plant varieties, and semiconductor integrated circuit layout designs.

The resource personnel for the training program included a Patent Examiner from Patent Office Kolkata, a Professor of Law from Sikkim University, and an IPR Research Expert from the Department of Science and Technology. The interactive sessions of the course, coupled with the expert guidance of the instructors, proved to be a rewarding and beneficial experience for the trainees, as they expressed their satisfaction with the program.

The Sikkim State Council of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology, would like to extend their appreciation to the Government of Sikkim and NECTAR for their support. The training program was successfully concluded on March 17th, 2023, with the distribution of certificates to all the trainees.
