Kalimpong: Shanta Chettri, a Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP from Kalimpong, has once again advocated for the inclusion of the Lepcha language in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution, providing a significant boost to the proposal.
Through her official Facebook page, Shanta Chettri announced that during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, along with three other bills, the Lepcha language will be introduced for consideration.
This development comes after Shanta Chettri initially raised the long-standing demand for the inclusion of the Lepcha language during the winter session’s Zero Hour on February 9, 2023.
It is noteworthy that this session will mark her final appearance as a Member of Parliament, marking the 260th session of her tenure.
Ren Norzang Lepch, a former MLA, serves as the Chief Convenor of the All India Committee for Inclusion of Lepcha Language in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution. The Indigenous Lepcha Tribal Association and its youth wing have been actively mobilizing support on the ground for the inclusion of the Lepcha language in the 8th schedule.
In a post on her official page, Shanta Chettri expressed her delight, stating, “I am delighted to inform that three bills, very close to my heart, will be introduced by me in Parliament during the 260th session. This session also happens to be my final session as a Rajya Sabha MP.”
She further elaborated on the three bills, stating:
1. The 13 Shakti Peeths of West Bengal Bill, 2023: This bill aims to connect all the 13 Shakti Peeths of West Bengal, creating a Parikrama marg (pilgrimage route) and boosting tourism, along with providing various other facilities for pilgrims.
2. The Siliguri International Market Bill: This bill aims to establish Siliguri as a common marketing hub for neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, and West Bengal, generating significant employment opportunities and fostering economic growth.
3. Inclusion of Lepcha Language in 8th Schedule Bill: This bill holds great personal significance for Shanta Chettri as it aims to ensure the preservation of the Lepcha language.
Reflecting on her impending retirement, she expressed a sense of fulfillment, stating, “Retiring on a high note is giving me a super feeling of fulfillment.”
The inclusion of the Lepcha language in the 8th schedule of the Indian constitution has garnered substantial support, with advocates emphasizing the importance of preserving indigenous languages and cultures in the country. The upcoming monsoon session of Parliament will serve as a crucial platform for further discussions and deliberations on this matter.
