Protest Demanding Justice for Late Padam Gurung Erupts into Violence
Namchi: A rally held in Namchi town, Sikkim, to demand speedy justice for the mysterious death of a 21-year-old youth leader turned violent on Monday. The protesters, demanding answers and accountability, clashed with the police, resulting in injuries on both sides and the imposition of Section 144 Cr PC in the district town.
Tensions Escalate in Namchi
The rally, organized by the All Sikkim Gurung Tamu Buddhist Association, expressed public outrage over the delayed justice in the death case of late Padam Gurung. Participants from Gurung’s village of Chuba Perbing, along with representatives from various political parties, joined the protest in solidarity with the deceased’s family.
Clash with Authorities
As the rally commenced from Kisan Bazaar, tension arose when participants clashed with police over alleged attempts to confiscate placards bearing Padam Gurung’s photos. Despite disagreements, the rally continued on its route but later decided to deviate from it to head towards a specific restaurant-cum-residence at Kazitar road.
Police Attempt to Disperse the Crowd
A large police security team, including anti-riot forces, formed a protective cordon between the protesters and the residence. The building in question has been linked to a name circulating on social media as the prime suspect in Gurung’s death. The situation intensified as the crowd engaged in stone-pelting, prompting police to fire tear gas shells and resort to lathi-charging to disperse the mob.
Calls for Justice and Accountability
The family of late Padam Gurung maintains that he was murdered and not accidentally swept away by an overflowing drain. They demand immediate action from the authorities and express frustration over the police’s reluctance to disclose relevant facts. The Sikkim government formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the incident, and a judicial inquiry led by a High Court judge is ongoing. The report from the judicial inquiry is expected to be submitted on August 12.
Authorities Regain Control
After several rounds of heated arguments and clashes, the situation was brought under control, and Section 144 Cr PC was imposed in Namchi to restore order.
As investigations continue, the people of Namchi remain vigilant, seeking answers and hoping for a resolution to the tragic death of their youth leader. The call for justice resonates in the town, as the family and the community wait for truth and accountability.
