The Finance Act 2023, introduced by the BJP-led central government, has triggered widespread concerns among the people of Sikkim. The Act dilutes the “Sikkimese” definition and weakens the protection afforded by Article 371F, which safeguards the distinct identity and interests of the three ethnic communities in Sikkim: the Lepcha of Sikkimese origin, Bhutia of Sikkimese origin, and Nepali of Sikkimese origin.
In the letter addressed to Shri J. P. Nadda, Bhaichung Bhutia highlights the contradiction between the resolution passed in the Sikkim assembly, which acknowledges the dilution of the Sikkimese definition and the claims made by the Chief Minister during his visits to the central government. Hamro Sikkim Party emphasizes that it was the BJP-led central government that introduced the Finance Bill 2023, which led to this dilution, and therefore holds the responsibility to rectify this matter.
Hamro Sikkim Party believes that preserving the essence of the Sikkimese identity is of utmost importance. It calls upon all stakeholders, including the central government, to act swiftly and rectify the dilution of the “Sikkimese” definition and Article 371F to ensure the protection and welfare of the Sikkimese people.
Sincerely,
